Oriakhi May Not Be Eligible To Transfer To SEC Program

Alex Oriakhi’s transfer options may be limited by the bylaws of various conferences throughout the country, such as the Southeastern Conference.

Oriakhi completed three years of eligibility at UConn. The SEC requires prospective transfers to have more than one year of eligibility remaining.

SEC schools Florida, Kentucky and Missouri had been mentioned as possible destinations.

Alex Oriakhi received his official release from UConn, which means he can begin talking to prospective schools.

North Carolina, Missouri and Duke are among the teams that have reached out to Oriakhi, who averaged a career-low 21.5 minutes and 4.8 rebounds per game as a junior.

He will not consider Duke, according to a source.

Jeremy Lamb is expected to enter the June 28 draft.

Lamb, a 6-foot-5, 180 pound shooting guard, is billed as a possible lottery pick.

He averaged 17.7 points on 47.8 percent shooting this past season.

Omar Calhoun Named New York Player Of The Year

Omar Calhoun has been named the 11-12 Gatorade New York Basketball Player of the Year.

Calhoun averaged 25.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per game for Chris the King.

Calhoun will attend Connecticut this fall.

Alex Oriakhi will seek a transfer from UConn.

"Alex will transfer because of the NCAA tournament next year," Alex Oriakhi Sr. said.

Uconn faces a 2013 ban on playing in the NCAA tournament because of its sub-par academic progress rating.

Oriakhi, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound junior, averaged a career-low 21.5 minutes per game this past season.

GMs See Drummond's Stock Declining

Andre Drummond had a somewhat disappointing freshman season at Connecticut.

While he came into the season as a consensus top-three pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, Drummond's stock has fallen.

Two general managers said this week that they can foresee Drummond falling out of the top-five.

Drummond finished with averages of 12.6 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.4 blocks per 36 minutes. He had TS% of 51.3% and rebound rate of 16.7%.

Alex Oriakhi Considering Transfer From UConn

Alex Oriakhi said that he is considering transferring after three seasons at UConn.

“I’m going to sit down with my family and we’ll make that decision,” said Oriakhi, who at times was frustrated with his playing time and how he was used alongside Andre Drummond.

“It is going to be difficult, especially for the program next year. You know, guys are going to have to make tough decisions on their future.”

Kris Joseph of regular season champion Syracuse headlines the 2012 All-Big East First Team. He is joined by Jae Crowder and Darius Johnson-Odom of Marquette, Jason Clark of Georgetown, Kevin Jones of West Virginia and Jeremy Lamb of Connecticut.

Crowder was named Big East Player of the Year.

On the All-Big East Second Team is Scoop Jardine of Syracuse, Jack Cooley of Notre Dame, Sean Kilpatrick of Cincinnati, Jordan Theodore of Seton Hall and Maalik Wayns of Villanova.

Dion Waiters of Syracuse headlines the All-Big East Third Team and is joined by Darryl Bryant of West Virginia, Vincent Council of Providence, Herb Pope of Seton Hall and Henry Sims of Georgetown.

Receiving Honorable Mention consideration is Ashton Gibbs of Pitt, Maurice Harkless of St. John's, Kyle Kuric of Louisville, Cleveland Melvin of DePaul and Hollis Thompson of Georgetown.

Fab Melo of Syracuse was named Defensive Player of the Year, while teammate Waiters was named Sixth Man of the Year. Cooley won the Most Improved Player award.

Calhoun Plans To Coach Just Five Days After Undergoing Back Surgery

Jim Calhoun returned to practice Friday four days after undergoing back surgery and will be on the sidelines for the Huskies' home game vs. Pittsburgh on Saturday.

"I'm getting back to normal," Calhoun said Friday. "I'm not quite as cranky as I should be, but hopefully I will get there."

Calhoun, who missed eight games while suffering from spinal stenosis, plans to return next season.

"I have not made plans to do anything else except come back," he said. "A few things along the way have gotten in my way."
